ABA therapy for children in Spain: start without a queue
ABA therapy for children in Spain exists, but it is hard to reach through the public system: help is organised by region, and intensive behavioural work mostly runs through private centres or online. You can start on several fronts at once instead of picking a single waiting list, and the steps are below.
If you have only just arrived, do not yet speak the language and do not know the names of the services, the situation is a familiar one. Feeling lost at this stage makes sense, and it eases once you have a map in front of you.
How early care (atención temprana) works in Spain
Spain has no single national law on early care. The autonomous communities run it, so the age limit, the way you apply and the scope of services depend on the region. That is the conclusion of the confederation Autismo España in its 2021 legal analysis: where a family lives shapes the quality, the intensity and the start date of help for a toddler who has been identified with autism or is at risk.
Early care is usually meant for children from birth to age 6, and it works with the family as well. In Andalusia the services are called CAIT centres. The route most often begins with a paediatrician, but your community may do it differently, so first ask at your health centre (centro de salud) how to reach the early care service. In Andalusia, under a 2018 order, you can also request a second assessment if your child was not referred to a CAIT or you disagree with the plan.

Disability certificate in Spain for a child: where to apply and how long it takes
A disability degree of 33 % or more opens access to a set of rights and benefits, as Discapnet explains. The assessment is done at the Centro Base for your home address, and you can apply online or in person. In Madrid, children under 6 are assessed by CRECOVI. The scoring scales are the same across the country, but each community issues the document, so timing varies. One family guide gives 6 to 8 months, which is a good reason to apply early.
The file usually includes an ID (DNI or NIE), the family book, medical reports, the diagnosis and reports from the specialists already working with your child. Ask your Centro Base for the exact list.
ABA therapy for children in Spain: public help and private centres
According to an ABA International overview, behaviour analytic services in Spain, as in other European countries, are scarce compared with the US, and most analysts work in private centres or in the family home after school. Public early care is generally multidisciplinary, and intensive ABA therapy is not always part of it. Ask the centre directly which methods it uses and how many hours a week your child is entitled to.
We do not quote prices. Open data on what ABA costs in Spain is thin, and figures from commercial sites cannot be checked. Ask for a written quote and find out whether it covers the skills assessment and supervision. Our article on how to choose an ABA specialist lists questions for the first conversation.
How a family from Ukraine can get medical care for a child in Spain
People who hold temporary protection can use general healthcare on the same terms as Spanish citizens through an individual health card (Tarjeta Sanitaria Individual). According to the government, by early 2025 91,492 people had received one. In Madrid the right to free care starts as soon as you hold the receipt for your protection application (resguardo). Enrolment in school and nursery follows the rules of your community's education authority, so check your region's website.
What to do today while you wait for ABA therapy
- Call or write to your health centre and ask how to reach the early care service. Join the waiting list today, since it does not get in the way of the other steps.
- Apply for the disability assessment at the Centro Base without waiting for the diagnostic process to finish.
- Put together one folder with the diagnosis, reports and a few short videos showing how your child asks, plays and communicates.
- In parallel, start a remote skills assessment in your own language. It does not depend on a referral or a waiting list, and it does not need an official diagnosis, as we wrote in do you need a diagnosis for therapy.
Oh, and one more thing. How sessions with an analyst over video work is covered in ABA specialist online abroad, worth a look if you are unsure about the format.
At Sense Behavior the skills assessment and the start of an individual programme happen remotely, in the family's own language, without waiting for a referral from a local service. The rules in Spain change from region to region and over time, so check your community's official website before each step. This text offers general guidance and does not replace a consultation. The outcome of therapy is different for every child.
