Speech therapist for a child in Bulgaria: where to go if therapy is not helping
A speech therapist for a child in Bulgaria is available both free and for a fee, but the first question is not "where else can we sign up" but "what exactly is not working in the current sessions". If a therapist is already in place and progress is invisible, the cause is often session frequency or a missing foundation for speech rather than the specialist's qualifications. If there is no therapist nearby, it helps to know which free options exist and how to get into them.

What is available in Bulgaria
The main free option is the State Speech Therapy Center (DLC) within the education system. According to its questions and answers page, work at the center is free and voluntary, children aged 3 to 18 are accepted, and no referral from the family doctor is needed. Once a child is in the schedule, the usual pattern is one visit a week. You can enroll by place of residence or by the kindergarten or school the child attends.
How enrollment works is described in the parents section. Speech cabinets are located in schools and kindergartens, with a list on the center's site. The DLC school year runs from September 15 to June 15, and enrollment takes place on the last two days of the month after a notice from the therapist. If there is no place in the schedule, the child goes on a waiting list. After enrollment a neuropsychological assessment is done, and the therapist may refer the child to other specialists (ENT, ophthalmologist, neurologist). The center works at the level of "general support" and treats conclusions of other institutions as advisory. Phone 02 983 5360, email dlc@logoped.bg, address: Sofia, 30B Exarch Yosif St.
An important caveat from the same Q&A: the center holds that it is not in the child's interest to work with two speech therapists at once. If you already see a private specialist, you will have to choose between the options.
In kindergartens and schools the law assumes speech therapists and psychologists, but in practice there are not enough of them. According to Struma.bg, this was said by Tsvetelina Atanasova, a senior expert on inclusive education, who advised kindergarten heads to look for hiring options. We do not give prices for private specialists: open data on them is out of date, so ask each therapist directly.
Why a speech therapist may "not help"
These are working hypotheses for a conversation with a specialist, not a diagnosis:
- Frequency. One session a week, even with a good plan, gives a limited amount of practice, and without repetition at home the skill does not stick.
- No foundation for speech. If the child does not yet ask with words or gestures, does not follow your attention and does not imitate, articulation exercises run into the absence of a reason to speak.
- The goal is not about daily life. A sound is produced in the office, but in everyday situations the child does not ask, answer or comment.
- The family does not see the program. If nobody explains what to do between sessions, progress depends on a single hour a week.
If your child barely talks, start with what to do if a child is not talking at three and how to teach a child to ask.
Regional inequality: if there is no therapist nearby
DLC cabinets are tied to specific kindergartens and schools, so the first step is to check whether there is a cabinet in your area and to ask the municipality about educational support. If there is no cabinet or the waiting list is long, that does not mean the child must wait without work: the foundation for speech can be built remotely. Cities with more specialists are collected in our piece on Bulgarian cities.
How a behavioral approach complements speech therapy
A behavioral program does not replace the speech therapist. It prepares the ground: teaching to ask (mand), to hold joint attention, to imitate sounds and movements. These skills are assessed with VB-MAPP testing. It works best when the speech therapist and the behavioral specialist know each other's goals.
