Autism diagnosis in Armenia: where to go in Yerevan

Autism diagnosis in Armenia starts with parents' observations and a pediatrician's visit, and open sources describe no single route with named institutions. Below is what can be confirmed: the numbers, the age at diagnosis and a few reference points in Yerevan.

Who makes the diagnosis

According to parents in an OC Media piece, the path runs through a psychiatrist: one mother noticed her son's repetitive movements at one and a half and went to a psychiatrist, while another child was diagnosed at four. The publication names no clinics. There are no tests that confirm or rule out autism; the diagnosis rests on observing the child and talking to the family. If a child has a speech delay, hearing should be checked separately by an audiologist or ENT doctor.

What is known about the numbers

Age scale from 0 to 7 years: the M-CHAT-R screening window (16–30 months) and the mean age at autism diagnosis in Armenia (4.5 years, spread ±2.5)

There is no exact count of children on the autism spectrum in Armenia. The Ministry of Health reported 741 children as of 2019 (623 boys and 118 girls), and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, according to OC Media, now speaks of 793 children. A population study in Children (2026) using 2021 outpatient data estimated prevalence at 2.3 cases per 1,000 children aged 0 to 18 and at 3.7 per 1,000 in Yerevan, with a mean age at diagnosis of 4.5 years. Civil society organizations believe the real number is higher because some families do not register the diagnosis.

The most practical figure is the last one. The M-CHAT-R screening questionnaire is designed for ages 16 to 30 months, while the diagnosis arrives at 4.5 years on average. Between the screening window and the average diagnosis lie two to three years that a child may spend without sessions while the family looks for a specialist or hesitates to seek an assessment.

What to do while the assessment is under way

The first step can be taken at home: fill in the free M-CHAT-R questionnaire and write down specific observations (what your child does, from what age, in what situation). With that note, the pediatrician and psychiatrist visits go further. We covered what kinds of tests exist and what they show separately: autism tests for children. Sessions do not have to wait for the official word: a VB-MAPP skills assessment is done remotely, and which centers work in Yerevan we collected in ABA therapy in Armenia.

Diagnosis and paperwork

The law on the rights of persons with disabilities (2021) establishes the right to reasonable accommodations, including in education. The list of documents for registering a child's disability and the size of benefits are not described in detail in open publications, so ask at the polyclinic and at the local social protection service. Some families put off registration for years for fear of gossip, and one such case is described in OC Media. The decision belongs to the family, but without the document it is harder to get accommodations at school.

Private clinics in Yerevan: how to assess rather than trust the advertising

Directories of private clinics offering "autism treatment" are mostly advertising. The ICDC website has a "Diagnosis" section, but what it includes is not described, so ask. Before booking, find out who runs the appointment (a psychiatrist or a psychologist, with what training), which instruments they use (clinics usually name ADOS, ADI-R, CARS) and whether they issue a written conclusion that a school will accept. Once there is a diagnosis and you need to choose whom to trust with sessions, the list of twelve questions helps: how to choose an ABA specialist in Armenia.

How Sense Behavior helps families in Armenia

We do not ask for a ready conclusion to start: the program is built on our own assessment of your child's skills, and a family in Yerevan or any region works at the same pace. You can start with a free thirty-minute consultation, where we will go through what you have already noticed and how to fit sessions into the diagnostic path you have begun or are only planning.
